Carus Kids Receive "Reading is an Investment" Awards
Five Carus students were each awarded a $500 college scholarship savings account through the Oregon State Treasury Department. Each year students in grades K-5 are eligible to enter the program called Reading is an Investment, hosted by the Treasury Department. Students track the number of minutes read between October and March, read at least 3 recommended titles about money matters, and enter the contest online. State wide, more than 2300 students entered the contest this year. Ten winners are selected randomly by drawing from each of the five congressional districts.
At Carus, this optional program is promoted through the library. Books about “money matters” are read aloud to classes and students are encouraged to participate if they wish. Classroom teachers provide tracking systems to monitor progress and dedicated parent helpers assist with entering students as they reach their reading goals.
Treasurer, Ted Wheeler, made a personal visit to Carus on Wednesday, May 9th to acknowledge the students. He answered questions from the classes about his position, his education, and interests. A lively discussion took place about the value of reading and how those skills are applied in our lives. Mr. Wheeler presented the five winners with bright yellow drawstring bags and brought bracelets and bookmarks for everyone. -
